First steps for a new school: building a culture of success

img_0796The Hull School of Histories, Languages and Cultures was established for the start of the 2016-17 academic year. There are four subject groups: American Studies, History, Modern Languages and Philosophy.

The first year brought a range of developments, achievements and awards:

March 2017
> Dr Charles Prior (History) won a Leverhulme Research Fellowship. He is also working with Professor Joy Porter (History) on the Treatied Spaces project. See

May 2017
> Professor Greg Bankoff (History) won an AHRC Research Grant.

> Professor Joy Porter (History) won Hull’s best module award with ‘Into the Wild: The Environment and American Cultural History in the Nineteenth Century and Beyond’.

> Dr Kevin Corstorphine (American Studies) organised the inaugural School Student-Centred Approaches to Learning Environments and Scholarship event (SCALES).

July 2017
> Professor Marina Mozzon McPherson (Modern Languages and Confucius Institute – image above) won a Hull Employee Excellence Award for Scholarship in Language Learning and Teaching.

> Francesca Leveridge, First-class honours graduate (Modern Languages, 2017), won a PGT studentship in Translation Studies at UEA.

August 2017
> Professor Nick Zangwill (Philosophy) began a research fellowship in New Orleans at Tulane’s Murphy Institute.
